BOMA Advocacy

As a member of BOMA Silicon Valley, you’re not only joining a regional community of leaders, but a statewide and national community too.

BOMA Silicon Valley has a strong partnership with BOMA California and BOMA International, constantly working to protect your interests and advance the commercial real estate industry.

BOMA Silicon Valley

BOMA Silicon Valley's Government Affairs Committee members oversee BOMA Silicon Valley’s advocacy at the regional level and participate in BOMACAL, the state political arm of BOMA. BOMA Silicon Valley members receive periodic legislative alerts, which call attention to important legislative issues, updates on legislative activities, and articles on important issues in BOMA Silicon Valley newsletters.

BOMA California

BOMACAL represents each local Building Owners and Managers Association in the State Capitol and state regulatory agencies to preserve and promote the interest of California commercial real estate professionals. Through individual action and strategic alliances, BOMA California has accomplished the following:

Legislation: BOMA California tracks and directly engages legislators on policy proposals which would have significant impact our members.

Energy: BOMA California is the only organization representing the commercial real estate industry full-time in front of key energy regulatory agencies. Their efforts before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) led to significant rate reductions in Northern and Southern California, a historic agreement to allow owners to submeter tenants’ electrical usage, and stopped mandatory Demand Reduction proposals such as Critical Peak Pricing. It is estimated that these efforts directly saved members upwards of $43M in Northern California alone on their energy bills.

Regulatory/Taxation: BOMA California protects commercial property owners’ interests on a wide variety of issues including AB 32/Greenhouse Gas regulations, forced access by telecommunications companies, energy deregulation, mandatory statewide fire sprinkler retrofit requirements, split-roll property taxation, toxic mold liability, extreme new disabled access requirements, and more. BOMA California is also directly engaging in the process that will produce a set of "green" building codes, making California the first state in the nation to adopt such standards.

BOMA International

BOMA International's advocacy team is hard at work continuing to positively impact the commercial real estate industry and protect our members' livelihood. Last year BOMA was incredibly successful on a host of fronts. Last year, BOMA gained huge headway with ADA Lawsuit reform with the passage of the ADA Education & Reform Act in the House. BOMA International's president, Henry Chamberlain, also testified before Congress on the importance of the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction (179D). Additionally, we convinced congress to continue funding EPA’s ENERGY STAR program in FY19 appropriations bills.
