  SEPTEMBER 2014

President's Message

Gizelle LambHello BOMA Members!

I was in Kohl's the other day and I saw that they already have the Halloween decorations out but to my horror, they also had the Christmas decorations on display! I felt suddenly overwhelmed that time was passing way too quickly! For those of us working on budgets, it might be nice for the holidays to be here because budgets will be over!! But seriously, can we take it a little slower?

BOMA Silicon Valley has had some amazing programs and events so far this year; but don't worry, we have many more to come.  September 18th is our monthly luncheon and prior to the luncheon, we are holding an Emergency Preparedness seminar. This comes on the heels of the earthquake that happened a little too close to home in Napa.  It is a great time to brush up on being prepared for all types of emergencies both at our buildings and at home. I hope to see a great turnout.

For us wine lovers, the BOMA & Bauer's wine tasting takes place on September 26th.  We are going to visit 3 wineries in Gilroy.  Make sure you register soon for this event because we can only take 50 registrants!  I plan to be one of them.

In October, you can attend the Annual Celebration of Commercial Real Estate Event.  Awards will be presented.  You can meet your newly elected Board of Directors for 2015 as well as catch up with your comrades you have not seen in a while! This is always a lovely event.  This year we are holding it at a new venue: Le Petit Trianon!  We also have a new format so it should be really exciting.

All of these activities and more can be found on the BOMA Silicon Valley website so be sure to check it out and get registered! Congratulations to our new members. Make sure you check out the committee volunteer opportunities as well!  I look forward to seeing you all at the next event. Have a great September!

Cheers!

Gizelle Lamb, RPA/FMA

August Events: Work, Fun & Education

The last days of summer were busy ones for BOMA Silicon Valley.  A great mix of work, fun and education events brought members together throughout the month.

WORK:  The August luncheon focus was on workforce development.  Joint Venture Silicon Valley President and CEO Russell Hancock presented an overview of Silicon Valley current economic and employment statistics.  He provided projections and prospective challenges for the next 10 years in all employment sectors in our area.  Hancock ended his portion of the program with three crucial strategies for successful development of a workforce to meet our employment needs:

  • Addressing barriers that make training difficult such as digital literacy deficiencies.
  • Improving training initiatives by engaging industry partners and forming sector-based partnerships.
  • Improving career navigation by connecting workers and students through professional networks such as BOMA.

Tim Ballas, local CRE consultant, directed his presentation to specific concerns and strategies for developing our commercial real estate workforce.  Modeled after the successful careers program he helped to create for BOMA San Francisco, Ballas challenged the BOMA SV community to place specific workforce development goals in its strategic long range plan, to support our Emerging Leaders group, to volunteer as mentors to the NextGen of property management professionals and to collaborate with other CRE organizations in our region on workforce development efforts.

FUN:  Emerging Leaders held another successful Summer Solstice Mixer on August 14 at the Campbell Sonoma Chicken Coop.  Members networked, ate, drank, played the raffle and enjoyed a wonderful evening together.

EDUCATIONThe Energy & Sustainable Management Committee presented a Going Green! Building Tour on August 26 at the recently renovated Orchard Gateway property in San Jose.  The program focused on sustainability options for existing buildings.

MWest Properties which manages the property hosted the event which featured Paul Turek, Managing Director of Construction & Development for DivcoWest/MWest leading the panel of the renovation project architects, landscape designer, engineering and elevator professionals.

2015 Board Slate Announced

Principal members will elect their new Board of Directors at this month's September 18 luncheon.  In addition to the slate being presented by Nominating Committee Chair Leslie Fisk, members may write-in and nominations from the floor will be accepted.

The 2015 Board of Directors Slate:

PRESIDENT:  Anna Mcquillan Rose.  Mcquillan Rose is current VP for BOMA Silicon Valley.  She works as a Vice President, Broker Associate for Transwestern.  She volunteers on the Energy & Sustainable Management Committee.

VICE PRESIDENT:  Rebecca Barnes.  Barnes serves as the 2014 BOD Secretary.  She is a Senior Property Manager with LBA Realty.  In addition to her role on the Board, she chairs the Philanthropy Committee and was 2014 Vice Chair for the Sherie Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament. In 2015 she will chair the Tourney.

SECRETARY:  Kristen Schneider.  Schneider is a Manager of Operations for the Irvine Company.  She currently serves as a Director on the Board and in 2014 worked on the Programs Site Task Force.

President Gizelle Lamb will assume her role as Immediate Past President for 2015.  It was also announced that the Associates have elected Persis McGinn as the Associate Representative to the Board for 2015.

As per BOMA Silicon Valley bylaws, the September luncheon serves as the annual meeting of the association.  All Principal members in good standing may vote in the election.  The 2015 Board will be installed during the October 8 Celebration of Commercial Real Estate

Don't Miss the Bus

Bauer's Intelligent Transportation is again sponsoring the BOMA & Bauer's Wine Tour.  This year 50 lucky participants will tour and taste at Clos La Chance, Jason Stephens and Sarah's Vineyard.

Here are some of the smiling faces from last year's event:

As we went to press, space and a few sponsorships were still available.  But hurry – this event is sure to be a sell out!

Special Recognition for 2014 EPA Certifications

2014 is the 15th Anniversary of ENERGY STAR certification for buildings and plants.  To celebrate 15 years of certification, EPA is offering special one-time recognition to all partners who certify 5, 15, 50, or 150 buildings this year.   If you achieve one of these milestones, your organization will be highlighted by EPA and receive a special recognition package

The deadline for 2014 certification applications has been extended to December 12 to give you additional time to take advantage of this opportunity.

This special recognition opportunity is only available in 2014, so there's never been a better time to certify and join EPA in building a nation of certified buildings and plants – the ENERGY STAR Certification Nation.  But there are other ways to get in on the fun, too! Learn more about Certification Nation and ways you can participate!
