  OCTOBER 2015

President's Message

With so many quality events going on throughout the Silicon Valley at times it is difficult to make a choice on what to attend!

For example, on September 24 while I joined our members at the Tailgate Mixer (Great job, Associates Committee!), Rebecca Barnes, President Elect and Senior Property Manager for Cushman Wakefield, attended the Business Journal's Structures Awards Dinner in my place.

The following is Rebecca's feedback on the event:

The Structures Event was very well attended. It was held at the Fairmont, downtown San Jose and attendees included commercial real estate professionals from all over Silicon Valley. A healthy cross-section of property developers, property managers, tenants, general contractors, and brokers all enjoyed the dinner, wine, and awards program.  President Elect Rebecca Barnes was joined by BOMA Silicon Valley's Scott Pritchett of Woodmont Real Estate Services and George Denise of Oracle. Rebecca had the distinct pleasure of presenting the award for the Office/R&D Deal of the Year to Moffett Place!

A focus of the event was water and energy conservation. The awards also truly highlighted the importance of the tech industry as a driver of tenancy in the Silicon Valley.

Now it is BOMA's turn to present some awards! Our annual Celebration of Commercial Real Estate is October 15.  At this reception and luncheon we will install the 2016 Board of Directors, honor our volunteers, and present four buildings with recognition as The Outstanding Buildings of the Year (TOBY) award winners. For details on our awardees, visit the Celebration page.  And don't forget to register while you are there!

Issues & Answers

BOMA Advocate to speak on Sacramento's Plans for California CRE

On November 19, BOMA Silicon Valley is hosting our BOMA California advocate in Sacramento, Matthew Hargrove,Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs at the California Business Properties Association.

At our luncheon, Hargrove will present the commercial real estate "issues to watch" list of proposed 2016 legislation. Hargrove and the team at CBPA watchdog assembly committees and work diligently to present commercial real estate's viewpoint on proposals.

The November luncheon is your opportunity to learn more about these issues and what BOMA is doing to represent your interests. (Hargrove usually has an "interesting" and amusing story or two to tell about the behind the scenes antics of our legislators as well!) Join us at the final 2015 program luncheon

Share Your Holiday Kickoff

The Share Your Holiday Committee held its kick-off meeting on September 9.  Their planning is well underway for the December 4 event to be held at the beautiful Westin Sainte Claire in downtown San Jose.

This year's program is co-chaired by Tatiane Martins, Hudson Pacific Properties and Sam Russell, Accel Air Systems, Inc.  They are joined by a dedicated group of committee volunteers including Décor Lead Gizelle Lamb, J.T.Wakimoto Management, Gift Lead Terry Riecken, CMD Builders, and Sponsorship Co-Leads Marissa Laubach, Environmental Roofing & Waterproofing and Steve Delmonico, Veritiv.

This year marks the 26th year for the annual charity event.  In cooperation with City Team International, this program over the last 25 years has impacted the lives of more than 1,000 children, their families and supported programs for women in recovery. The Committee has committed this year to provide 100 more children and their families with clothes, toys and household goods.

What is Share Your Holiday?  Through funds raised at the December 4 luncheon by the donation and purchase of silent auction items or raffle prizes, as well as the purchase of "keys" to open and win a Wine Vault loaded with donated wines, BOMA members and colleagues provide a pool of funds.  These funds are then given to our volunteer shoppers who purchase toys, clothes and other items for needy families designated by City Team International. Delivery volunteers then drop the presents off to the families, ensuring a brighter new year for these children.

What can you do to help?

Donate or Sponsor!  We need great prizes for people to bid on, bottles of wine to fill the two Wine Refrigerators donated by Accel Air Systems, Inc., and cash to help buy presents for the kids. Click here to donate!

Attend the luncheon!  What a great place to holiday shop. The Auction is well known for the variety of wonderful items...gift baskets, artwork, electronics, and more!  Or buy one of the 50 keys available per wine vault. You could walk away with enough wine to stuff every stocking on your list! (Plus a wine refrigerator to take home, ready to chill wine for your next holiday party.) Bring friends, the more the merrier! Register here or download this pdf Registration flyer.

Volunteer!  Help plan and set-up the event. Call for donations. Shop for the kids and deliver to the families. We need volunteers! Complete the Volunteer Form and sign up to help.
