President's Message

Well it's November!! Before we turn around it will, of course, be gone as we gear up for the holidays.

Even with the holidays looming there is still much business to be done and transactions to close out before the New Year.

Here at BOMA SV we're in full transition mode for 2016. We have the Orientation & Planning session scheduled on November 18th at Club Auto Sport for all our incoming Directors, Committee Chairs, co-Chairs and of course, our incoming President Rebecca Barnes! We decided to have it late afternoon to early evening this year to accommodate everyone's work schedule. My year as President has really flown by. Maybe I'll extend my term for a couple more months. I'm very versed in drafting extensions!

The very next day, November 19th is our annual Advocacy lunch program. I'm looking forward to hearing about the bills we've won or were able to put on hold due to all of our collective efforts.

I'm excited about the changes we have implemented with the 2016 dues structure and our lunch programs. Renewals are going out this month which will have information about the benefits and enhanced value for both the Associate & Principal members. We realize there may be many questions, by you or your company decision maker. Please don't hesitate to give the office a call or shoot us an email.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Share Your Holiday event December 4th. Remember it will be held at the Westin Sainte Claire.

Advocacy for CRE: At Home and "On-the-Road"

November elections bring to mind BOMA's mission objective to be our advocate for commercial real estate. While the interesting by-play of the 2016 presidential election holds most of our attention, BOMA remains busy on key legislative and code issues being proposed in Sacramento and Washington.

BOMA California advocate, Matthew Hargrove, Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs at the California Business Properties, will speak to our membership at our November 19th Luncheon. He will discuss 2016 key issues-to-watch identified in early November by the BOMA Cal Board at its Strategic Issues Conference in Los Angeles. Matthew's annual report is always mixed with insider stories of what really happens in the halls of the State Assembly. 

In January, newly elected BOMA SV President Rebecca Barnes will join Government Affairs Chairwoman Sarahann Shapiro and BAE Sharon Fredlund in Washington, D.C. for the BOMA International National Issues Conference. They will join other California BOMAs in meetings with our legislators.  The goal is to brief our representatives in Washington on the impact their proposals, actions and in-action can have on the commercial real estate industry and the economy as a whole.  Asking for a permanent extension of 15 year leasehold depreciation on tenant improvements will be one key issue we will discuss with legislators and their staffs.

At past National Issues Conferences, BOMA California volunteers and staff have met with Senators Boxer and Feinstein, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (shown here speaking to our delegation) and other elected officials.

Share Your HEART This Holiday Season

BOMA Silicon Valley's annual charity event, Share Your Holiday, will be held Friday, December 4 at the Westin Sainte Claire in downtown San Jose.

Attendees will enjoy a delightful lunch and can participate in an amazing silent auction, raffle and even the chance to buy a key for one of two wine refrigerators loaded with great wine! All of these activities support our shopping & delivery program for 100 children and their families.

Your donations and attendance help us raise the funds to buy clothes, toys and household goods for each child's family.

Help the kids! Have a great time! What better way to celebrate the season?

Art Adoption: Great Art looking for a CRE Home

The TransAmerica Pyramid is looking for a home for two large installation artworks.  

Attached is some detailed information on the two installation artworks: (1) the "Stone Raft" reflecting pool and (2) the "Cork Cable Car".  Both artworks were installed at a 3-week long Iberian Art Exposition at the Kennedy Center in NYC, and are now looking for a permanent or long term home.

The Stone Raft is based on a book written by the Nobel Prize winning Portuguese novelist, José Saramago. More info can be found at:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone_Raft  The length of the Stone Raft reflecting pool is around 39 meters long and a few feet wide, but it can be shorter as the space between the continents can be made smaller. It can be displayed outside, of course.

The Cork Cable Car is a life size replica of cable car in use in Lisbon, but made entirely of cork. People can actually climb on it and sit in it.  The cable car/tram is 27.8 feet long (8,50m); 8.2 feet wide (2,50m) and 11.4 ft high (3,50m). The Cork Cable Car requires an indoor location.

Both art installations are offered on loan, and free of charge, provided the installation is secured and insured.  This is an excellent opportunity if you have a large lobby or plaza in which you wish to feature some extraordinary art!
