BOMA Silicon Valley Reps attend BOMA California Conference

By Sarahann Shapiro, Pahl & McCay
BOMA Silicon Valley Government Affairs Chairwoman

On June 13 and 14, 2017, your local representatives to BOMA California, Rebecca Barnes, Sarahann Shapiro and Gizelle Lamb (pictured at left), were pleased to attend and participate in the California Commercial Real Estate Summit in Sacramento, organized by the California Business Properties Association (CBPA), which brings together representatives from BOMA, CREW, NAIOP, IREM and many other commercial real estate groups to join together for advocacy on issues important to our industry.

The Summit kicked off with the CBPA legislative and business meeting, where we reviewed recent legislative developments, including successes with ADA reform, the push to eliminate energy mandates and the ever-present threat of split roll property tax.

That evening, we attended a dinner to honor our Legislators of the Year. This year’s honorees were Senator Pat Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and Assemblyman Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove). They each were presented with their award and offered insightful comments about the workings of their respective houses of the legislature as it relates to our industry.

The next morning, we started with a breakfast at which Alexis Podesta, the Secretary of the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency spoke to us about ongoing efforts in the areas of licensing and affordable housing. She also mentioned the challenges her agency is currently facing with respect to writing the new regulations required for marijuana growers and retailers.

After breakfast, we moved to the Office of the Governor, where we heard from Diane Harkey, the Chairwoman of the Board of Equalization, whose agency has been under some scrutiny recently, and from Senator Steven Glazer (D-Orinda), who discussed a number of issues with us, including energy and water.

We then broke into groups to make legislative visits, allowing us to connect with forty-five different legislators from all over the state, to thank them for the recent ADA reforms and to discuss split roll issues, solar energy, and the pending bill on parcel tax notifications.

Finally, we enjoyed lunch in the Capitol basement with our colleagues and those legislators and staff members who were able to join us. The general feeling was that the two days had been informative and productive and we were pleased to be engaging in advocacy efforts on behalf of all of our members and our industry. Next Up: BOMA & Bauer’s take Members to the Earthquakes Game

Bauer’s Intelligent Transportation is partnering with BOMA to take our members to a soccer game on July 14. With Bauer’s support, BOMA members and their guests can skip the parking and traffic: park your car and catch a bus from the Peninsula, South Bay or the BOMA office pick-up locations. Watch the game, meet up with BOMA colleagues…and then sit back as the bus takes you back to your car after the game!
