  JUNE 2016

President's Message

With half of 2016 behind us, this has already been quite an eventful year at BOMA SV. The Silicon Valley Commercial Real Estate industry has benefitted from declining vacancy rates and rising asking rates, which translates to busy real estate management teams and service providers engaged in the business of delivering service to our tenants and properties. BOMA is committed to helping our members excel as commercial real estate professionals through our many educational offerings, advocacy efforts, and networking opportunities.

Earlier this month, our members and friends in the commercial real estate industry took a much-needed time out to participate in our Annual BOMA-SV Sherie Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament. June 2nd was a great day with perfect weather at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose. Plenty of fun was had on and off the course.

I'm here with some of the Golf Volunteers as we set up for the Tourney.
See the article and pictures below for more on this great day.

The Tourney benefits the Sherie Dunn Memorial Scholarship, which was established in loving memory of our founding president.

Sherie Dunn was a trailblazer in the commercial property management profession, working her way up the career ladder to Vice President at RREEF (now a part of Deutsche Asset Management), and personally mentoring several of the managers and vendors that are still a part of BOMA Silicon Valley today. Even though she is no longer with us, Sherie's inspiring legacy lives on in the vibrant membership of this organization. Applications are now being accepted for the Sherie Dunn Memorial Scholarship. The application deadline is August 12, 2016.

As part of our advocacy efforts, the BOMA SV Government Affairs committee, led by Chairman Sarahann Shapiro, traveled to Sacramento for the California Commercial Real Estate Summit on June 7th & 8th.  Representatives from many commercial real estate groups gathered at the Summit to meet with State legislators and advocate on behalf of our industry. This direct advocacy on topics such as ADA and tax policy is vital to the many important issues which affect commercial real estate.

The BOMA SV team had the opportunity to meet with Joe Stephenshaw, a staff member for Senator Kevin de Leon D-Los Angeles, Presidente Pro Tempore.  We also met with Elena Leonard, a staff person for Assemblywoman Young O. Kim R-Fullerton and we met with Assembly member Mark Stone D-Scotts Valley.

Government Affairs Chair Sarahann Shapiro and Energy Chair
Jonathan Leder joined me in representing you at the State Capitol.

Later this month, the 2016 BOMA International Conference will take us back to Washington, D.C. where we will be immersed in the expertise, insights and opportunities needed to stay ahead on industry trends, maximize our effectiveness, and optimize the performance of our commercial assets.

I encourage everyone in the industry to attend the BOMA Conference if possible.  At the BOMA Conference you'll find inspiring keynote sessions, important networking events, along with a variety of targeted education sessions that offer fresh approaches, practical direction and tactical strategies for optimizing asset values, embedding sustainability initiatives into operational practices, honing leadership skills, cultivating next-generation talent, and much more!

Golf Tourney a Great Day of Sun & Fun!

BOMA Silicon Valley held its 18th annual Sherie Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 2 at beautiful Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. Thirty-five volunteers and over 30 sponsors worked hard to make the tourney a wonderful experience for the 200+ golfers registered for the event.

The Tourney Main Event Sponsor, BrightView, joined with our Memorial Sponsor, Deutsche Asset Management in sponsoring the Tourney in honor of our first President, Sherie Dunn.

Red, white and blue was everywhere at the patriotic-themed tourney. Golfers took chances at the $10,000 hole-in-one prizes or wagered a "Lincoln" ($5) they could reach the green to win raffle tickets for amazing prizes like a weekend in Tahoe or Lover's Point, a TV or more golf at Cinnabar!

Congratulations to Golf Co-Chairs Persis McGinn and Patti McBane for leading an all-star volunteer team!  Click here for more pictures of the Tourney.
