President's Message

With the BOMA International Conference in LA and our first local event, my President's Mixer, this summer is off to a great start!  (VP Rebecca Barnes recaps the Conference below.  For more pictures from our Mixer, just click our Photo Gallery.)

BOMA SV has seven, yes seven, more events coming up this summer:  workshops, mixers and luncheons, as well as deadlines for our TOBY awards and Sherie Dunn Scholarships.  Visit our website to learn more about everything happening this summer.

L to R: VP Rebecca Barnes of LBA Realty, Me, Treasurer Olga Ornelas of Hudson Pacific Properties, and Immediate Past President Gizelle Lamb, J.T.Wakimoto Management

I hope to see you at one (or all!) of these great events our hard-working committees have put together.

Highlights from the BOMA International 2015 Every Building Conference & Expo

Rebecca Barnes, LBA Realty
BOMA Silicon Valley Vice President

The BOMA International 2015 Every Building Conference & Expo was an exciting information-packed event, and our local BOMA Silicon Valley group was well-represented!

Coincidentally, the BET Awards were also hosted in Downtown Los Angeles on the weekend of June 27th, and parking lots around the renowned Staples Center were bursting with Bentleys and Benzes. The music and fashions were entertaining and unforgettable – but the crowds and detours were challenging to navigate at times. It wasn't difficult to spot fellow BOMA attendees, though…we were recognizable by our always-fashionable lanyards and BOMA name badges.

Hosted by BOMA Greater Los Angeles, we were treated to the sights and sounds of the revitalized, vibrant Downtown Los Angeles area and connected with the best and brightest minds in the Commercial Real Estate industry to focus on our efforts in leadership, education, and advocacy.  Gizelle Lamb - Immediate Past President, Sharon Fredlund - BAE and I attended the event on behalf of BOMA Silicon Valley; but a number of other local members were also in attendance. With over 500 educational sessions offered in addition to the many leadership and advocacy meetings, our mantra was 'divide, and conquer'! Incredibly, we managed to squeeze in a few fun networking sessions, too.

Revitalization of Downtown LA was the topic of Monday's General Session. The panel included some of the biggest players in Downtown. Pictured are moderator Hal Bastian of Hal Bastian, Inc., AC Martin's Robert Newsom and Rising Realty Partners' Marc Gittleman .

We hit the ground at full speed with pre-conference meetings on Saturday including the Government Affairs Committee tackling hot topics such as water conservation, energy efficiency, split roll taxes, and the reform of disability litigation.  Your Government Affairs representatives are hard at work to advocate for the interests of our Commercial Real Estate industry. I also attended enlightening leadership sessions, and gained valuable insight from Paul Meyer of Tecker International on strategies for the success of BOMA-SV.

Jay Leno was the highlight of Sunday's General Session in the Los Angeles Convention Center, regaling the crowd with his humorous observations. The BOMA Expo tradeshow was brimming with exhibitors including industry-leading providers of products and services to support building owners and managers in maintaining our buildings to the highest standards. Educational sessions included helpful workshops on the BOMA 360, BEEP and the new BOMA Industrial EER.

Envision Realty Services' Craig Sheehy, Corporate Sustainability Strategies' Brenna Walraven and Oracle's George Denise touched on no-and low-cost efficiency strategies from the BOMA Energy Efficiency Program (also known as BEEP)

Several fascinating building tours were offered.  Gizelle and I attended the tour of Watson Land Company's Legacy Building Series 156 a 220K sf industrial building in Carson, CA. The building is pursuing LEED Gold certification and boasts an ESFR sprinkler system, mind-bending 36' clear height, and is located along the Overweight Corridor with convenient port access. Tours were also hosted at Constellation Place, U.S. Bank Tower, and Ernst & Young Plaza.

Participants in the industrial building tour included BOMA SV members
Gizelle Lamb (3rd from Left) and Rebecca Barnes (5th from Left)

One of the fun networking events was the Monday night Welcome Party. BOMA Greater Los Angeles was delighted to show off the spectacular LA Center Studios featuring delicious selections of food, unique performers, and an outstanding party cover-band.

The capstone event was The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Awards Program and Banquet. An elegant reception cocktail hour set the tone for a wonderful evening of celebration. The culmination of the local and regional competitions, the BOMA International TOBY Awards is the most prestigious program which recognizes and honors excellence in building management. Joseph Markling of CBRE and Boyd Zoccola of Hokanson Companies proudly served as co-Masters of Ceremonies to announce the winners of each of the 15 International TOBY Awards categories.

BOMA SV VP Rebecca Barnes, Immediate Past President Gizelle Lamb and
BAE Sharon Fredlund enjoy the TOBY Awards.

Next year's Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., June 26-28, 2016. BOMA International has already begun planning what is sure to be an unforgettable event.

This year's Conference was a resounding success, and I hope to see you all there next year.
