President's Message

Along with Government Affairs Chair, Sarahann Shapiro and our BAE Sharon Fredlund, I was honored to take our BOMA message to Capitol Hill at the BOMA International Winter Business Meeting in Washington DC from February 1st-3rd. While exploring the city, we found it to be true that as Armstrong Williams stated, "In Washington, DC, politics dominate even the most casual conversations."

We personally met with Senator Dianne Feinstein as well as Congresswomen Zoe Lofgren and Jackie Speier to advocate on behalf of the commercial real estate industry on issues involving depreciation schedules for fire sprinkler upgrades, ADA notification policies, and tax credits for energy efficiency upgrades. The concerns of our industry are best presented when BOMA members, speaking as constituents, talk directly to our elected officials about how legislation affects our businesses. The 2016 Winter Business Meeting was an incredible opportunity to review critical legislative issues and communicate our message in a unified fashion to Congress.

BOMA Silicon Valley was honored with an award at the Board of Governors held during our stay in D.C. (See below for my picture with the other associations honored. That's me on the far right.) Our BOMA had outstanding member participation as a mid-size association in responding to last year's EER (Experience Exchange Report) survey. This benchmarking resource is a critical guide nationally recognized as the commercial real estate industry's most accurate and comprehensive resource for CRE professionals. We hope our members will again participate in this important research! Click here to see how easy it is to participate.

In addition to our advocacy efforts, real estate education is a cornerstone of our Mission Statement at BOMA-SV. Through BOMA-SV and BOMI International, we have access to the finest professional education designation programs in commercial real estate. For example, Melissa Bowman, Controller at Orchard Commercial will be leading the next RPA course, Budgeting and Accounting. Anyone who participates in budget preparation or is involved in financial reporting would benefit from this course, which will be held on Wednesday nights from March 16th through May 4th from 6:00-9:00pm. I encourage you not to miss this outstanding course offering.

One thing we all learned at the meeting in D.C. is that we as CRE professionals must stay on top of new and changing codes and regulations.  Our Energy & Sustainable Management Committee has a great workshop coming up on March 24.  Don't miss Beyond Title 24, BMS and "Trending" Systems.

J&J Air Conditioning and DAVCO Waterproofing are teaming up again to host our 28th Annual BOMA Roofing & Air Conditioning Seminar.  This Roof Walk seminar is a terrific hands-on learning opportunity that will give attendees new tools and strategies to make educated decisions on air conditioning and roofing issues.  The Roof Walk will be held this year on April 21st from 7:30am–1:30pm, and registration includes continental breakfast and lunch.  BOMA is looking for a building to host the roof walk, so please contact James Sandoval of J&J Air Conditioning or Don Baker of DAVCO Waterproofing if you have a building that may accommodate this valuable seminar.

Our January luncheon was an outstanding success.  Many thanks to Joe Lewis of Orchard Commercial for assembling a stellar panel of Rising Star brokers to share their views of the Silicon Valley commercial real estate market.  As we have made the shift from monthly luncheons to quarterly luncheons, and including our luncheons as a part of membership, we are enjoying increased attendance in new venues, and look forward to more of these high quality and relevant programs.  Our BOMA-SV calendar is booked up for the coming months with many exciting gatherings and educational opportunities.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events.
