President's Message

Gizelle LambHello BOMA Members!

It is hard to believe that it is August already and summer is almost over! School starts next week for a lot of kids too. I hope everyone has had the chance to take some time off to enjoy the summer and spend time with Family and friends! Some members are getting ready for budget season and before you know it, the holidays will be upon us! The year is flying by.

BOMA Silicon Valley has had a busy summer as well.  Past president George Denise attended the BOMA International Convention in June and gave us his summary last month. The sold out Sherie Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament was a huge success.  In July we had the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Workshop, the Annual River Cleanup and the President's Mixer.  (See pictures and details below.)

The President's Mixer had a great turnout.  I personally want to thank all the sponsors and the wine makers for a really fun evening!

August is going to be a very busy month, too. In addition to the monthly luncheon featuring Tim Ballas and Russell Hancock who will be presenting a program on Workforce Development, the Emerging Leaders committee is putting on a Summer Solstice mixer on Aug. 14th, and on the 26th, MWest is hosting a Green Building Tour featuring Sustainability Options for Existing Buildings.

All of these activities and more can be found on the BOMA Silicon Valley website so be sure to check it out and get registered! Congratulations to our new members. Make sure you check out the committee volunteer opportunities as well!  I look forward to seeing you all at the next event. Have a great August!

Gizelle Lamb, RPA/FMA

No Summer "Break" for BOMA

July was a busy month of activities for BOMA members…education, community events, meetings and fun filled the calendar.

Energy and Sustainable Management Committee Holds Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Seminar

Thirty members and colleagues heard presentations and had their questions answered regarding installation of EV Charging Stations at commercial buildings.  Details on the installation, scope of work, maintenance, incentive programs for EV Stations, and other general resources from the seminar are available on the Sustainability page of the BOMA website. Look under ARCHIVE Sustainability Programs.

BOMA Joins Other CRE Organizations to Clean Up Our Community

Members joined CREW, IFMA, and ASVB colleagues on Saturday, July 12 as they pulled tires, carpet, mattresses and more from along the creekside in San Jose.  The low water levels in the creek allowed us to pull items that had rested and blocked the creek bed.  Muddy, grungy and tired, our members felt a true sense of accomplishment in seeing the huge pile of debris recovered through their efforts.  Special thanks to Iron Construction who organized the clean-up day and to Gachina Landscape for sending an entire work crew to the event.  Thank you for a job well done!

President Lamb Welcomes Members to her Mixer

Wine, food and conversation were the agenda items for the evening as members gathered in South San Jose for a relaxed evening together.  The heat didn't hold back 40+ members from having a great time together!  For more pictures of all the fun, click here.

Looking for Instructors for BOMA Silicon Valley Classes

Put your expertise in sustainability in front of our commercial property professionals.  BOMA Silicon Valley is looking for instructors for 2015 to lead classes in the new High-Performance Sustainability programs.

The new High-Performance Certificate and RPA/FMA HP Sustainability Designation programs teach property managers how to effectively implement new efficiencies and drive sustainable initiatives in their buildings. These programs assist the managers in making a positive impact on the environment, their organizations' bottom line, and in developing their careers.  Click on these links to learn more about the HP Certificate and RPA/FMA HP Designation programs.

What does it take to lead these classes?  Past presentation skills and general knowledge of sustainability practices are, of course, a must.  BOMI provides detailed teaching manuals, outlines and materials.  In addition, BOMI is offering free "Train-the-Trainer" webinars to prepare our HP instructors.

There is still time to register for one of BOMI International's Train-the-Trainer webinar sessions!

To ensure our new High-Performance Program courses are a success, we will be offering two opportunities for our current and potential instructors to participate in a webinar reviewing the design and content in the three new High-Performance Program courses. These sessions are also the best place for all instructors to:

  • Get acquainted with and understand the content and layout of these new courses
  • Learn to effectively use instructor support resources, visual aids, and other course materials
  • Review tactics for creating an interactive learning environment and gaining student commitment

Select a Train-the-Trainer webinar below to REGISTER NOW!

Wednesday, August 20, 2014;  3:00 pm-5:00 pm ET  (12 noon-2:00 pm PST)
Wednesday, September 17, 2014;  12:00 pm-2:00 pm ET  (9:00 am-11:00 am PST)

Please note, once your registration is approved by the host, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions for joining the session.

For assistance on the HP program, please e-mail Kerry Petz at kpetz@bomi.org

Interested in finding out about teaching our other courses?  Contact the BOMA Silicon Valley office for details!

Thank you for your participation!
