  APRIL 2016

President's Message

I have a lot of news to cover as BOMA continues to have a full schedule of events and programs in 2016!

ASSOCIATES NIGHT SUCCESS
I am pleased to report that BOMA Silicon Valley's Associates Night Trade Show was a rousing success!  78 Exhibitors took center stage to showcase their companies at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara Grand Ballroom on April 7th.

An enormous thanks goes out to all of the amazing volunteers who contributed to this event under the outstanding leadership of Associates Night Chairman, Brian Michael of Perfection Sweeping

The registration volunteers worked hard to keep check-in moving smoothly.  Thank you to Nicole Jessup and Collin Breen of All Bay Paint & Facilities and Patty DiNapoli of Cyber Switching.  Many lucky attendees left with a variety of raffle prizes.  Thanks to Jeannie Nyberg of American Asphalt for her helpful assistance with the raffle announcements.

Our BIG Cash Winners of the night were:

  • $1,000 raffle for completing an "In-the-Hall" card, visiting 10 exhibitors throughout the show - Marion Paige of Hudson Pacific Properties
  • $1,000 raffle for completing a Go Green! card, visiting 10 exhibitors in our sustainability pavilion – Rebecca Quey of Sand Hill Property Co.
  • $1,000 raffle for completing a Safety First! Card, visiting 10 exhibitors in our emergency preparedness pavilion – Susan Gitlin of PS Business Parks
  • $500 raffle for completing a Platinum Sponsors card, visiting all 7 of our Platinum Sponsor exhibitors – Rebecca Barnes of Cushman & Wakefield

All of the exhibitors and sponsors, as well as more photos of the event, are listed on the BOMA-SV Trade Show page.

RECENT BAY AREA ADA LAWSUITS ALERT
BOMA International is constantly monitoring and responding to legislative, regulatory, and codes and standards initiatives as part of its mission to advocate the interests of building owners and managers in the various model code and standards setting organizations.

The Mercury News recently reported that serial ADA lawsuit filer, Scott Johnson, has begun to focus on East Bay and South Bay businesses and since October, he has sued 39 businesses in various cities including San Jose and Campbell.

BOMA supports legislation that protects the commercial real estate industry from "drive by" lawsuits by imposing notice and a compliance opportunity before commencement of a private civil action under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  BOMA believes that this will encourage building owners to correct any noncompliance issues and make their buildings accessible to all Americans, while protecting building owners from onerous lawsuits motivated by financial compensation.  We encourage you to get involved in BOMA's advocacy efforts, helping to strengthen our industry by educating legislators about our concerns.

PLANS FOR RECORD-SETTING BUILDINGS IN MILPITAS
The skyline of Milpitas may be in for a remarkable change.  Milpitas City Council recently approved the 22-story Landmark Towers-Milpitas proposed by BDK Capital LLC.  This mixed-use project at 600 Barber Lane in Milpitas will be the tallest buildings in Milpitas and will consist of two 19-story residential towers over parking, retail, and office space.

SAVE THE DATES
As we move into the 2nd Quarter of 2016, please be sure to mark your calendars for these upcoming events.

Thursday, April 21st – 28th Annual BOMA Roofing & Air Conditioning Seminar hosted by J&J Air Conditioning and Davco Waterproofing.  This seminar will be held at 5353 Betsy Ross Drive in Santa Clara, and is an excellent opportunity for hands-on instruction on roofing and air conditioning systems.

Wednesday, May 4th – TOBY Awards "How to Enter" workshop will be hosted at 3979 Freedom Circle in Santa Clara.  The TOBY is the most prestigious and comprehensive award program of its kind in the commercial real estate industry.  As a 2015 local TOBY award winner, I encourage everyone to participate in this recognition program!

Thursday, May 19th – Our 2nd Quarterly Luncheon will be held at the Westin Sainte Claire in downtown San Jose.  Larry Stone, Santa Clara County Assessor, will be our guest speaker at this exciting and informative program.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming programs and luncheon!

Oracle Wins Pacific Southwest TOBY

BOMA Silicon Valley announces that one of our local TOBY (The Outstanding Buildings of the Year) awardees has been named the PSW Regional TOBY Corporate Facility category winner.  Oracle Redwood Shores will advance to the International TOBY competition.  Winners will be announced at the International Conference & Expo in Washington, D.C. in June.  (Click here for more details on the Conference.)

Oracle Redwood Shores is a twelve building corporate headquarters located in Redwood City. The property includes office space with over 8,500 workstations, seven cafes, and a centrally located fitness center with saunas, steam rooms, an outdoor lap pool, and a wide variety of cardio and strength training equipment.

The complex management team is headed by George Denise.  Energy & Sustainable Management Chairman Jonathan Leder is also a member of the winning team.

Congratulations, Oracle Team!

Goodbye!

In late March BOMA Silicon Valley reluctantly said goodbye to longtime office manager Barbara Hopwood. Barbara has served BOMA for over 8 years. Always a smiling, welcoming presence at BOMA events, Barb has moved out of the area to be near family.

BOMA members will have one last chance to say their goodbyes to Barb when she is honored at our May 19 Luncheon at the Westin Sainte Claire.

And Hello!

As the Board Staffing Committee evaluates how best to fill the position, members will be served by our temp administrator, Alvin Wong.  Alvin comes to us from AccounTemps.  He fortunately spent a week with Barb "learning the ropes".

Alvin has great drive and a positive, helpful attitude which BOMA members will appreciate.  Please be patient as he learns the whos and whats of BOMA SV!  And please do say hello and introduce yourself at our next BOMA event.
