Hello BOMA Silicon Valley Members, can you believe its April already!
So much has happened in the past 90 days. Here are some highlights, Apple stock is the lowest it has been since 2008 despite a new version of the iPhone out every year. Dell acquired EMC making it the largest merger to date at a price of $67 billion dollars. California was hit with major rainstorms which caused San Jose to experience one of the worst flood storms in almost 100 years making 14,000 people evacuate their homes in mid-February. If you haven’t already done so, this is a great time to revisit your emergency plan both at home and your business. Our Emergency Preparedness Committee has gathered some information so please visit the Emergency Page at http://www.boma-sv.org/emergency/. The good news is that most of California has been declared out of a drought for now.
So what’s in store for us over the next 90 days? For BOMA Silicon Valley you don’t want to miss out on the annual Associates Night Trade Show happening on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. This is sure to be a great night with raffles prizes, food and time for networking. Our quarterly Luncheon, scheduled on Thursday, May 18, 2017, is programmed to bring news on how D.C. and Sacramento will impact our properties in 2017 with guest speakers, Brian Harnetiaux (Chair for BOMA International) and Matthew Hargrove (Sr. VP of Government Affairs at the California Business Properties Association). Finally our Sherie Dunn Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Cinnabar Hills. This year’s theme is “Around the World in 18 holes”. If you haven’t bought your tickets, foursomes are selling fast. For a schedule of all BOMA Silicon Valley events please visit our website www.boma-sv.org/events/.
As always our goal is to bring our members great and informative programs, relevant education to further your learning, and networking opportunities for all of our members.

The 2017 TOBY Awards are now open! The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Awards are open to BOMA Silicon Valley members. There are 16 categories, including the sustainability recognition Earth Award.
The Award process is an excellent way to audit your building, train staff and involve your team: staff, tenants and vendors.
A well-managed building has all the information you need to enter right at hand: safety training, financial reporting, maintenance manuals, and your standard operating procedures. Because that is what the TOBYs are all about: excellence in building management. Your building may not be the prettiest, or Class A. What matters is what you the manager do with what you are given!
Want to learn more? Attend the May 3 TOBY How-To Workshop. Hear from past entrants and judges. Receive copies of all the judging forms (no surprises). Find out what it takes to get the recognition your hard work deserves.Recognition is a big part of the TOBYs. Our media partners, the Silicon Valley Business Journal and The Registry, will both feature the TOBY awardees. Plus we feature the entrants prominently on our website and at our annual Celebration of Commercial Real Estate on October 13.
What Does Government Plan for CRE in 2017?
Uncertainty is never a positive for commercial real estate. The changes in Washington and in Sacramento leave all of us with questions of the impact of potential new legislation or regulatory changes that may complicate our already complicated day-to-day management of commercial property.
Our Government Affairs Committee, led by Chair Sarahann Shapiro, is hard at work reviewing prospective California legislation, giving feedback to our advocate in Sacramento and following the advocacy efforts of BOMA International on Capitol Hill in D.C.
To provide some insight into what is happening in the state and throughout the country, our Programs Committee is bringing in BOMA International’s Chair Brian Harnetiaux, Senior Vice President Asset Management at McCarthy Cook, and BOMA Cal advocate Matthew Hargrove, Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs at the California Business Properties Association.
Join us at our Quarterly Luncheon on May 18 at the Westin Sainte Claire in San Jose. This luncheon is a must to prepare for what will (and won’t) happen this year.
Just a reminder: BOMA Silicon Valley Principal members and Associate representatives have the quarterly luncheons included with their dues. Additional personnel from Associate member companies may attend at a reduced member rate. Non-member vendors may not attend the quarterly luncheons.
